HAZEN, Ark—On Saturday, April 25, Hazen quiz bowl will play for their second consecutive state championship.
The Hazen senior high quiz bowl team, made up of members Michael Bowman, Trever Fulmer, Christian Hune, Vesper Feazell, Mathew Essex, and Pepper Feazell, has won all nineteen matches it has played this year, and has a thirty-five-game winning streak dating back to the 2024 season.
It's taken effort—the team had to replace three of last season's starters, and has practiced tirelessly since the school year started to prepare for various tournaments: in addition to the normal conference and state tournaments played during the AGQBA season, Hazen competed in the Harding Invitational in October and plans to take their talents to Atlanta to compete in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments' High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT).
Team members have been ramping up their preparation in advance of the state finals, and they know they're in for a challenge in Arkansas TV's studios. "They're not gonna lay down, they've been ranked all year and they're playing in their own backyard," Bowman said of Conway Christian, Hazen's opponents in Saturday's final. "But we've beaten them before, and we're confident we can walk in there and do it again."
Hazen has never won back-to-back state titles in any AAA-sanctioned activity or sport—if they can complete the repeat, 2026 Hazen quiz bowl will have performed a first-time feat in Hazen school history.
Hazen's match is at 3:30 P.M. CDT on April 25, 2026, directly following the 3A match between Haas Hall Bentonville and Haas Hall Fayetteville.
